David, I just saw a blurb on the Blogger dashboard site that says they made a mistake and are having problems with numerous bloggers getting tagged as 'spam.' They say they are working to correct it.

Don't know if this makes a difference for your plans, but just thought I would pass it along, FYI.

I have bookmarked this new site too, David. Maybe I'll be able to comment here. I have never been able to get past the registration process at Blogger.

Well, I sympathize with the work of moving content over. Otherwise, I'd say good riddance to blogspot/blogger.

David,

Once you get used to WordPress, you'll never look back. WordPress should be able to import your content from the Blogger site. I made the same change about a year and a half back after another round of Blogger weirdness. I decided I didn't want to be under their control.

I don't know how I missed this: War on Guns has a nice red sidebar on the left explaining Codrea's position. Also, in comments to his last post before the block (comments still work, oddly enough) he explains that WordPress will not import pictures. (Somebody, come up with a tool that fixes this!) There's also the matter of the many, many external links going to the Blogger address.

By the way, this is not just happening to gun sites, or right-wing sites, or political sites. See this post, and comments, over at the left Knox Views, which features speculation that this is an anti-spam bot that Blogger released on itself, although I wonder if it might not be some kind of denial of service attack that's robotically pushing "Flag as Spam" buttons.

Fair warning to all who choose to invest the time and effort David has on a site you do not own.

UPDATE: I am back up and running at Blogger, but I have no earthly idea what happened this afternoon or why. They never offered any explanation.

I think the key word here is "forced".

I, too, believe WordPress is far and away a better blogging tool, being powerful, easily configurable in its native form, hugely extensible through plugins, and easily portable. (Plus, I hate hate hate Halo comments. I've lost more comments through Halo than any other comment tool. And the syndication feeds from Blogger sites are often broken.)

Nevertheless, being evicted without fair cause is inherently offensive -- in and of itself a excellent reason to move of your own accord without challenging the eviction.

Of course, the fact that so many are being blocked on a false charge of so despicable a sin as spamming, without being offered a responsive venue to challenge the charge, is in my mind reason enough to abandon Google/Blogger, even if you are not now one of the sufferers.

No blogging tool is perfect (what tool is?), but Blogger is not only a very limited tool for serious work, it also, as we now see, puts you at the mercy of a single, possibly hostile authority.

I'm bookmarking waronguns.wordpress now,

Believe it or not, they have locked me out of my Google account too today. I don't have access to Blogger at all, and can post no new entries or comments as of now.
